CEO Response to International Tariff
Dionysus Lemos, CEO of The Dionysus Group and parent company to Portland, Maine based Maine Lobster Company, a worldwide shipper of Maine lobster, applauded the Trump administration's brokered deal this week to waive, reversing the long standing tariff and administering the international U.S. to EU export of future lobster sales as duty free, "as the right thing to do, and a shot in the arm for the U.S. lobster industry".
Lemos said, Tuesday on Maine Public Radio, in describing Maine lobster as the crown of the seafood industry, "moving forward, it now puts us squarely in a more equitable position competing for European market share with our Canadian counterparts for those purchase commitments out of Europe". "The Canadians' finalized their trade agreement back in 2017 and since then have been shipping tariff free and just hammering us." "We were faced with a twenty to thirty percent tariff trying to do business over there, putting us at a significant disadvantage in recent years. Europe is just too large of a market to ignore", Lemos said.
